Mount Kilimanjaro is located on the northern border of Tanzania, an East African country formerly known as Tanganyika in colonial times. Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the tallest independent mountain in the world. It is located approximately 200 miles south of the equator.
One of the seven peaks, located on the African continent, Mount Kilimanjaro sits at 19,341 feet, 5895m above sea level at its highest point, Uhuru Peak. It was formed about 750,000 years ago around the same time as the Great Rift Valley. The last major eruption is said to have occurred around 360,000 years ago.
